Where the gold is

Nigeria's gold sits in two schist belts (bands of old rock): the north-west, from Zamfara and Kebbi through Niger and Kaduna, and the south-west, through Kwara, Oyo and Osun to Kogi. Most of it is mined by hand, in small workings, by people who sell the same day.

Map of Nigeria with the principal gold-belt states shaded gold, other states with reported gold in sand, and Abuja marked
Principal gold-belt states: Zamfara, Kebbi, Katsina, Kaduna, Niger, Kwara, Kogi, Oyo, Osun. Other states with reported gold: Sokoto, Bauchi, Plateau, Nasarawa, Edo (Nigerian Geological Survey Agency occurrence records). Boundaries from the geoBoundaries open dataset (2022). The states for the first buying centres will be confirmed in the licence applications.

Before you sell to us

  • What you will need: a valid small-scale mining lease or mining lease (or, where the Ministry permits, gold won under an exploration licence), or membership of a registered mining cooperative; a government-issued identification such as your NIN slip, voter's card or driver's licence; and a bank account in your own name. We can tell you how to open one with your NIN, and payment can go to your registered cooperative's account if you prefer.
  • Price: the London benchmark less a discount we will publish at every buying centre and on this site before the first purchase.
  • Assay: free, done in front of you. If the field test and the refinery test differ, the refinery certificate decides, and you will see it.
  • Payment: by bank transfer, never cash. An advance on the day; the balance within an agreed number of days of the refinery certificate.
  • First centres: states and dates will be published here once the licence applications are lodged.
