Gold prices, in context

A guide to the world price of gold, what it means per gram in naira at the Central Bank of Nigeria rate, and how gold has moved over the decades next to other commodities.

Information, not advice. Figures here are indicative, that is, a guide drawn from public sources, not a price we offer. They are not an offer to buy or sell and not investment advice. Wangara Gold Ltd (in formation) is not yet licensed to buy gold and has not opened a buying centre.

Gold price today, as a guide

Gold, per gram in naira₦184,240per gram of fine gold (24 karat), at the CBN rate
Gold, world priceUS$4,319per troy ounce
CBN exchange rate₦1,347.03per US dollar, central rate (the mid-point between the bank's buying and selling rates)

How much is the gold in my lot worth at the world price?

Enter a weight and purity. The result uses the world price above and the CBN rate. It is a starting point, not an offer. Once we open, our price will be set from the LBMA Gold Price on the day, less a discount we will publish. The discount covers refining, transport, insurance and our costs. The world price shown here is a free public feed, not that benchmark, so the two will differ.

Value at the world price. Not our price.Enter a weightThis is not an offer. Our price will be lower and will be given to you in writing after the assay.

How to read it

  • Fine gold means 99.9% pure. Doré (raw gold from a mine, melted into a rough bar) and jewellery carry less gold per gram than fine gold, so two lots of the same weight can be worth very different amounts.
  • Assay is the test that establishes purity. Until a lot is assayed, every value is an estimate.
  • Discount is the gap between the world price and what a buyer pays. It covers refining, transport, insurance and the buyer's costs. We will publish ours before we open for buying.
  • One troy ounce is 31.1035 grams. World prices are quoted per troy ounce; Nigerian trade is mostly per gram.

Gold over the long run

Monthly average prices. The world price is in US dollars. The naira view multiplies it by the Central Bank of Nigeria monthly average central rate, so it reflects both gold and the exchange rate.

Each chart is followed by a table of the same values. To read a month by keyboard, focus the chart and press the left or right arrow key.

Gold next to other commodities

Gold alongside silver, platinum, copper, crude oil and cocoa. Cocoa is Nigeria's largest farm export. The chart sets every price to 100 in Sep 2006; a line at 200 means that price has doubled since then. The tables show the change in percent.

These figures show how far prices have moved. They are not a reason to buy, hold or sell gold, and past movements do not predict future prices.

Six commodities, each set to 100 in Sep 2006, US dollars Each step up the side of the chart is the same percentage change, so a doubling looks the same at any price

Methodology and sources

  • Live world price. From gold-api.com, a free public price feed, updated about once an hour. It is a guide price, not a benchmark. We do not show the LBMA Gold Price, because displaying it needs a licence from ICE Benchmark Administration.
  • Exchange rate. The Central Bank of Nigeria central rate for the US dollar on the latest day published (28 October 2026 when this page was last refreshed). For the history we use the monthly average of those daily rates, from December 2001.
  • History. World Bank Commodity Price Data (the Pink Sheet), monthly averages in US dollars from 1960, updated 2 October 2026. Used under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 licence. Prices are as recorded at the time, not adjusted for inflation.
  • Units. Gold, silver and platinum per troy ounce; copper per tonne; crude oil (the average of Brent, Dubai and WTI) per barrel; cocoa per kilogram.
  • Calculations. Naira per gram = US dollars per ounce × naira per US dollar ÷ 31.1034768. Percentage changes compare monthly averages.

What this page is not

  • Not a buying price. We are not yet licensed to buy and have not opened a buying centre.
  • Not a forecast or a recommendation to hold, buy or sell gold or any other commodity.
  • Not a benchmark. Figures may differ from refiners' and banks' quotations.
